Why is REMS better than DXA?
REMS is completely non-invasive so there are no harmful effects. Every time you get scanned with DXA, you are exposed to radiation.Â
Advanced fail safe mechanisms prevent REMS from giving inaccurate test scores. DXA is heavily reliant on a skilled technician to perform the test correctly.Â
Even when performed correctly, DXA has a wide margin of error that can produce inaccurate density scores for a number of reasons.
REMS provides a fragility score measuring the quality of the bone tissue, where as DXA only offers density scores.
You can compare REMS reports to assessments done on other machines, however DXA reports can only be compared when done in the exact same setting.
Why does my doctor still use DXA?
DXA has been what they consider the "Gold Standard" in bone density testing since it was introduced. The medical complex is always slow to change their positions, even when they are presented with abundant evidence. It may be a while before REMS becomes the mainstream source for bone density testing.
However, if you tell your doctor that you would prefer to have a REMS test in place of your next DXA, they will often agree and allow it. So the next time you visit your primary care provider for a check up, and they say they want you to get a DXA, tell them you want REMS!
